Magazine carrying first published writing of Yasunari Kawabata discovered… 
“KUMAMOTO — A magazine carrying the first published writing of Nobel-prize winning author Yasunari Kawabata (1899-1972), written while he was a student, has been found. Kawabata wrote the piece in 1917, while he was what would be a high school student under the current educational system. The writing is a factual report of students at the school conducting a funeral procession for a teacher Kawabata respected. The writing was carried in a magazine along with a photo of the actual funeral. Kawabata later wrote a novel in 1927 and another in 1949 based on this earlier writing. The existence of the writing and the fact that it was published in the magazine were already known from an explanatory writing about Kawabata’s body of work, but the contents of the piece were unknown…”
